This post is Part 2 of my review of the reverb pedal BOSS RV-6. If you haven’t read Part 1 yet, you can do so before reading Part 2.
Here are my descriptions and evaluations of the best modes on the RV-6 for the electric violin.
.
Hall Reverb Mode
My default mode when using this pedal for the electric violin. Hall means you can sound like you are playing in a vast concert hall. The Time knob allows you to alter the size of the Hall (from a small recital hall to a gigantic cathedral). The longer the Time, the longer the reverb “trail.”
The E. Level knob adjust the loudness, or intensity of the reverb effect. And the Tone knob adjust the brightness of the reverb sound produced.
The Hall reverb on the RV-6 is extremely solid. When in doubt, use Hall mode. It works for all types of music and it sounds great. Hall is great for worship music.
.
Room Mode
Room Mode is where it makes you sound like you are in a room (and not in a hall, which is bigger). You can adjust whether you are in a “big” room or a “small” room. It is great for country music, classical music, or other types of music where you don’t need a lot of reverb. You don’t want a dry sound that is devoid of any reverb, sometimes you just want a smidge of reverb to make it sound good.
.
Modulate
How do you describe modulate mode? Modulate is adding “movement” to the reverb sound. It is not as clean as Hall but intentionally adds more “busy-ness” to the sound. As violinist, we manually add modulation to the sound by using vibrato.
You can say, modulation/modulate/mod = vibrato.
While vibrato is manually controlled by the performer, the modulate mode in a pedal is automatically controlled by the parameter settings on the pedal.
You can choose to not use modulate at all, but just use your own vibrato. I find that it does sounds good with modulate and your own vibrato at the same time. It is just personal preference.
