Instrumental Soaking Worship!

What is it and why I love it

In this video, I am playing instrumental soaking worship music on my Jordan electric violin. The background track I am playing to is Field of Grace by Terri Geisel. The style of worship music I am playing here is called soaking music. It is a type of worship music (with or without vocals) that is more contemplative.

With soaking music, the audience/listener is not expected to sing along, or dance, or to shout, but to be still before the Lord. One can be in silent prayer, or in listening prayer mode, having a quiet conversation with God, or be meditating on Scripture, or just be “waiting” on God, or “resting” in God. It is a style of music that emphasize receiving from God in the moment.

Soaking worship is devotional worship, and the audience it is often encouraged to lie down on the floor if possible, to be in a posture of rest. To lie down is a revolutionary and radical act of worship, because the religious would rather you be kneeling or standing with arms raised. They frown upon any other posture that does not signify our “works.”

Over the years, soaking worship has been the primary type of music that I have played on my electric violin. I often play solo with background tracks or with one or two other musicians (typically guitar, piano keyboard, or harp). Normally there is no drums or bass. Playing soaking worship is where my musical gift really shines.

On the other hand, I do enjoy playing upbeat praise songs with a full band and singers, and I love being a part of a skilled worship team where everyone is listening to each other, and yielding to each other. It is good to play both styles. God’s presence can come strong in both high praise and deep soaking. Often, soaking music creates the atmosphere where the Jesus ministers deeply in the healing of the heart.

I will elaborate more on soaking in future posts. It is a topic that I love teaching about! I will post more soaking violin videos as well. In the video above, I am using wireless (Line 6 Relay G10S), and the amp I am playing out of is my Yamaha THR5A. I am using just one effects pedal for my sound—it is the Strymon Blue Sky v1. I will go over each of these gear in depth later.

Blessings,

Sam
